Prayer Time in Singapore

Introduction:

Muslims make up a sizable portion of the population in Singapore, a multicultural nation known for its diverse religious practices. Prayer holds great importance  for Muslims, as it strengthens faith and spiritual connection. Mosques are the primary places of worship, and Singapore is home to over 70 mosques. In this article, let’s look at the prayer time in Singapore.

The Five Daily Prayers:

Muslims are required to perform five daily prayers, known as Salah or Salat. These prayers are very important and form an essential part of the Islamic faith. Each prayer has a specific time during which it should be  performed. These time durations are determined by the movement of the sun and can vary slightly from day to day. To the beginning of each prayer, Muslims are encouraged to perform the Adhan, a call to prayer. The Adhan is melodiously recited, inviting worshippers  to gather for Salah. When praying in a mosque, the Iqamah is recited just before the prayer begins. The Iqamah is a shorter version of the Adhan and serves as a signal for worshippers to stand in line and prepare for Salah.

Prayer Timing in Singapore:

Singapore follows the Islamic lunar calendar to determine prayer times. The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) provides accurate prayer time tables that are widely used by the Muslim community. The following are  the different prayer times in Singapore:

  • The Dhuhr prayer is offered in the midday when the sun is at its peak. Muslims often take a break from their daily activities to perform this prayer.  The Dhuhr prayer time in Singapore is around 1:11 p.m to 1:12 p.m.

In Singapore, the Workplace Religious Harmony Act ensures that employers provide reasonable accommodations for employees’ religious practices, including prayer time. This allows Muslims to request prayer breaks or make use of prayer rooms during working hours. Similarly, educational institutions recognize the importance of religious practices and provide prayer spaces for Muslim students.

Jumma Prayer Time:

Jumma, or Friday prayer, is a congregational prayer performed by Muslims every Friday. It holds great religious importance as it brings the community together, allowing Muslims to listen to a sermon given by an imam.

The Jumma prayer time in Singapore typically coincides with the midday prayer (Dhuhr) and consists of two rak’ahs (units of prayer). The exact time may vary depending on the Islamic calendar, but it usually begins around 12:30 PM or 1:00 PM.

Eid Prayer Time :

Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha are the two significant Islamic festivals celebrated by Muslims worldwide. In Singapore, these joyous occasions are marked by special prayers known as Eid prayers.

Eid ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, begins with the sighting of the new moon. The exact timing of Eid prayers depends on the lunar calendar and may vary each year. Typically, Muslims gather early in the morning, shortly after sunrise, to perform the Eid prayer. Like Eid ul-Fitr, the timing of Eid ul-Adha prayers is contingent on the lunar calendar and can vary.
